Yes! This is a course-Hispanic Culture and Literature Thru Translation- offered in TRANSLATION AND INTERPRETING STUDIES (Çeviribilim) in Boğaziçi, my university. I have to thank Serkan, to make me add this to my program!
Actually I have to wait 2 extra hours to be able to attend but I don’t mind really. I had my first class on last Wednesday, we talked about many stuff, we began with history of Iberian Peninsula : Romans, Vizigoths and Arabs… How they contributed, what they did etc. I really felt I was having my horizons broadened. We have texts both in Spanish and English; after reading them we translate them into Turkish and then we interpret the issue.
First of all, concentrate on TWO WORDS: Conquest and Invasion. This two words show your position in history when using them. e.g. Arabs coming to Spain ( i said come on purpose), if someone says Arabs invaded Spain, that means they are at Spanish side, however if someone says Arabs conquered Spain, then this means they are at Arabic side. So it is very important the word we choose. The lecturer told us that Latin American books look at these issues of Spain more objectively and they think that North African Culture is rich, whereas she added none of European originated books would never use this phrase.
Then we talked about how Latin America and Turkey are alike… Two lands where many civilizations passed… Even at class we all looked differently so this shows the blend of different nations…
The neighbor country in Iberia, Portugal, she said they are also more like Turks… More sad, with melancholy, with Fado music… They are not that into Fiesta Fiesta Fiesta like their brothers ( nuestros hermanos ).
I have this course Non-Credit, I really wanted to say good-bye to Boun, with a nice course in the pocket because I could never manage to get FA courses like Jazz Appretiation etc.
