Açık konuÅŸmak gerekirse vefat edinceye kadar Maya Angelou’dan bihaberdim. Ne zaman ki yaÅŸamını yitirdi ve tüm dijital medyada bir sürü sözüyle yankı buldu; o zaman kendisini inceleme fırsatı buldum. Türkçeye çevrilmemiÅŸ ama en ünlü kitabı olan ve kendisinin 17 yaşına kadarki biyografisini konu alan “I know why the caged bird sings” ( KafeslenmiÅŸ kuÅŸun neden ÅŸarkı söylediÄŸini biliyorum) kitabını ısmarladım. Zaten kitabın ismi bile beni derinden etkilemeye yetti. Tahmin ettiÄŸim gibi kitap oldukça sarsıcı. Yazarın hayatından kesitleri okuduÄŸunuzda, farklı renklerin insanların hayatına renk katmadığını tam tersine bir yaÅŸam mücadelesi baÅŸlattığını görüyorsunuz. A.B.D.’de o zamanlar ( kısmen hala) siyah tene sahip olmanın ne kadar zorlu ÅŸartları beraberinde getirdiÄŸini görüyorsunuz. Beni ÅŸaşırtan diÄŸer bir konu Goodreads’te okuduÄŸum olumsuz eleÅŸtiriler oldu. Kitaba 5 üzerinden 1 yıldız vermiÅŸ birçok insanın yorumu; bu kitabın çocuklarına lisede edebiyat dersinde zorunlu kitap olarak verildiÄŸini; kontrol etmek için kendileri okuduklarında ÅŸoke olduklarını ve 15 yaşındaki oÄŸullarının asla böyle ÅŸeyler okumaması gerektiÄŸini söylüyordu. Bahsettikleri olaylar: Tecavüz, yazarın erkek kardeÅŸi ve kız arkadaÅŸlarının oyunları ve son olarak sevgisiz bir ÅŸekilde nasıl hamile kaldığını anlatması. DoÄŸrusu ÅŸaşırdım, bu tip olaylara yer veren birçok romanı ortaokuldan beri okuyorum; lise çağındaki bir çocuÄŸun bu tip yaÅŸantıların farkında olması gerektiÄŸini düşünüyorum. It hasn’t been long that we have lost another precious writer: Maya Angelou. Telling you the truth I did not know about her before (what a shame). As soon as I got to know her, I immediately ordered her famous book “I know why the caged bird sings”; even the title was enough to make me wonder about her story. Of course I was not wrong, the book has moved me. I saw how different colors do not bring light to one’s life and how hard it was to survive as a Black person back in the US. I was also very surprised to see some negative comments on Goodreads. Many people rated the book 1 star out of 5 as the book included scandalous (!) parts of the author’s life such as: Rape, her brother and his girlfriends’ play and how she became pregnant. Many people were complaining that the book was given by the high school as literature reading and their 15-year-old boy is not capable of reading such things. I find it ridiculous. I read the book myself; I was reading such stories when I was even in junior-high.
