A Promised Exhibition / Vadedilmiş Bir Sergi
Gülsün Karamustafa
SEPTEMBER 10, 2013 – JANUARY 5, 2014
I was deeply affected by this exhibition especially by the installation Apartment (2012), where the artist follows the trail of the former Greek-Istanbulite owners of her residence in Cihangir ( Bazlamacı Apartmanı) back to Greece. The story of Vaslamatzis family back then the owners of Olympos soda pop (Olimpos Gazozu) who had to leave their homeland because of Septembriana. I have never seen real photos of 5-6 September 1955 (so called Septembriana, Istanbul pogrom) before. The exhibition made me aware of this fact again. I read a book called “Hulki Bey ve Arkadaşları” from Yiğit Okur in 2011, that book also made me think of Septembriana deeply…
