VOY A DORMIR

(I am going to sleep)

Dientes de flores, cofia de rocío,

Teeth of petals, bonnet of dew,
manos de hierbas, tú, nodriza fina,

handfuls of herbs, oh sweet nursemaid,
tenme prestas las sábanas terrosas

turn the earthly sheets down for me

y el edredón de musgos escardados.

and prepare my quilt of  carded moss.

Voy a dormir, nodriza mía, acuéstame.

I’m going to sleep, my nursemaid—lay me down;
Ponme una lámpara a la cabecera;

put a lamp on the nightstand for me,
una constelación; la que te guste;

or a constellation, whichever you like—

todas son buenas; bájala un poquito.

both are fine; turn the lights down a bit.

Déjame sola: oyes romper los brotes…

Now leave me alone and hear the buds break …
te acuna un pie celeste desde arriba

as you’re rocked by a heavenly foot from above,
y un pájaro te traza unos compases

and a bird zigzags you a path

para que olvides… Gracias. Ah, un encargo:

so that you can forget … Thank you. Oh, a favor:

si él llama nuevamente por teléfono

if he calls again

tell him not to insist, for I have gone away …

Alfonsina y el Mar

Por la blanda arena
que lame el mar
su pequeña huella no vuelve más
y un sendero solode pena
y silencio llegó
hasta el agua profunda
y un sendero solo
de penas puras llegó
hasta la espuma.

Sabe Dios que angustia te acompañó
qué dolores viejos calló tu voz
para recostarte arrullada en el canto
de las caracolas marinas
la canción que canta
en el fondo oscuro del mar
la caracola

Te vas Alfonsina con tu soledad
¿qué poemas nuevos fuiste a buscar?

y fosforescentes caballos marinos
harán una ronda a tu lado.
Y los habitantes del agua
van a nadar pronto a tu lado.

di que me he ido.

Te vas Alfonsina con tu soledad
¿qué poemas nuevos fuiste a buscar?

Alfonsina and the Sea

By the soft sand
that licks the sea
its small track does not return
and a single footpath of pain
and silence reached
the deep water
and a single footpath
of pure pain reached
the foam.

God knows what distresses accompanied you
What old pains shut up your voice
So you lay down sung to sleep by the song
of the marine conches
The song that sings
in the dark bottom of the sea
the conch

You go away Alfonsina with your solitude
What new poems you went looking for?
And an old voice of wind and sea
breaks your soul
and it is calling it
and you go away,
towards there, like in dreams,
Alfonsina asleep, dressed in sea.

Five little mermaids will take you
by paths of seaweed and coral
and fluorescent sea horses
will dance around at your side.
And the inhabitants of the water
are going to swim soon at your side.

Lower the lamp a little more
Allow me to sleep, nanny in peace
and if he calls,
don’t tell him that I am,
Tell him that Alfonsina will not return.
and if he calls, never tell him that I am,
say that I have gone away.

You go away Alfonsina with your solitude
What new poems you went looking for?
And an old voice of wind and sea
breaks your soul
and it is calling it
and you go away,
towards there, like in dreams,
Alfonsina asleep, dressed in sea.
